Your Way Basic Knit Hat
Design by L'Tanya Durante

The beauty of this basic hat pattern is that it can be embellished my way, your way, or in any way.  I've chosen to embellish it with novelty yarn. In October of 2006, I attended Stitches East and got this novelty yarn as a gift.  I could never figure out what to do with it until now – the chain stitch embellishment is perfect.

Skill Level
Beginner

Size
Child [Adult] – 19” (48cm) [24” (61cm)}

Materials
Yarn:
Approximately 140-175 yards of sport-weight wool.  I used Jagger Spun, The Maine Line, Raspberry; scrap amount of novelty yarn.
Needles/Hook:
Size US 8 (5mm) circular needle – 16” [24”]; size US 8 double-pointed needles (5); size H crochet hook – or sizes needed to obtain gauge.
Notions:
Tapestry needle for weaving ends, stitch marker.

Gauge
5 ½ sts per 1 inch

Instructions
With circular needle and novelty yarn, CO 104 [132] sts.  Place marker and join, being careful not to twist stitches. Change to main color.
Round 1:  *k2, p2. Repeat from *. Continue until ribbing measures 2" (5cm).
Next round:  Knit in stockinette stitch (knitting every round) until piece measures 6 ½” (17cm) [7 ½” (19cm) from beginning. Begin decreases.

Decreases for Child (if making adult-sized hat, skip to decreases for adult instructions)
Dec rnd:  *k6, k2tog. Repeat from * around. [91 sts]
Next rnd:  Knit.
Next dec rnd:  *k5, k2tog. Repeat from * around. [78 sts]

Note:  Alternate each decrease round with one round of knitting.

Next dec rnd:
  *k4, k2tog. Repeat from * around. [65 sts]
Next dec rnd:  *k3, k2tog. Repeat from * around. [52 sts]
Next dec rnd:  *k2, k2tog. Repeat from * around. [39 sts]
Next dec rnd:  *k1, k2tog. Repeat from * around. [26 sts]
Next dec rnd:  *k0, k2tog. Repeat from * around. [13 sts]

Next round:  Knit

Decreases for Adult
Dec rnd:  *k6, k2tog. Repeat from * around. [110 sts]
Next rnd:  Knit

Continue alternating decrease rounds with knit rounds until 22 sts remain.  Note that on each decrease round, you knit one fewer stitch before the k2tog (see decreases for child above).

End with knit round.

Cut yarn, leaving a tail of approximately 16” (40cm).  Thread a tapestry needle with the tail.  Thread through the remaining stitches and pull to gather.

Finishing
Weave in ends.  With right-side facing, hold novelty yarn under your work (wrong side) and make slip knot.  Insert crochet hook (from right side to wrong side) and pull slip knot through to right side.  Insert crochet hook in next stitch, catch yarn underneath (yarn over), and pull through loop (chain made).  Continue making these accent chains to embellish the hat your way!
