The Cool Girl's Guide to Knitting:
Everything a Novice Knitter Needs to Know
by Nicki Trench

Reviewed By Sandra Chambers

Do you ever take a look at the books in the five dollar bin at your local big name craft store? It seems like there are always plenty of cookbooks or holiday craft books. Rarely do I come across a knitting book.  However, this book was in good supply last week at my local mega-craft store. It is a British publication that contains 20 projects ranging from a cotton summer hat to cute dog jackets. There's also the "easy sweater" which is all garter stitch and fingerless gloves that have little pockets on them.

The book begins with a brief history of knitting dating from AD 1200-1500 with a few pictures and takes the reader up to today with extreme knitting -- knitting while sky diving. Of course there is a picture of celebrities knitting and the obligatory section on yarn, supplies and knitting techniques. At the end of the book, there are two patterns that do not require knitting. One is a "needle udder" (a needle case) made out of black and white cow print fur fabric with a pink lining. The other pattern is a tote bag made out of a fleece blanket with a t-shirt transfer picture on the front. Both of these projects require more than just a passing familiarity with a sewing machine.

I would not consider this strictly a beginner book because there are 2 handbags that incorporate beads, buttons and ribbons. Also the "dare to wear bikini" is small but requires various shaping. Since this is supposed to be a book for the novice knitter, there should be more photos, especially close ups of the projects. Just about all of the projects use Rowan or Debbie Bliss yarns. I would say that this book is better for the advanced beginner to intermediate knitter with the exception of a few scarves and the cell phone/iPod cozies. All in all though, it is well worth the five bucks.
