So Right Sarong
Designed by Marie
Stroughter
Note:
Though this is done in garter stitch, you will want to mark the increase
side with a stitch marker a few rows into the pattern to remind yourself
which side to increase on. It will become obvious, but for "mindless
knitting," it's easier to place the marker!
Materials:
MC: 200 yards of DK weight yarn (sample used 2 skeins of Berroco Glace)
CC: 100 yards of DK weight yarn (sample used 1 ball of Venus by S. Charles)
US size 11 - 13 needles (depending upon how airy you want it)
1 locking or split ring stitch marker
Abbreviations:
st =
stitch
RS = right side
YO = yarn over
MC = main color
CC = contrasting color
Instructions:
CO 1 st.
Increase side:
Row 1 and every RS (odd-numbered) row: With MC, inc. 1 by knitting into the
front & back of first st.; k to end of row
Row 2: K all sts.
At the same time: every 10 rows, switch to CC. Do a "set-up" row for a
drop stitch (*k, YO; rep from * to end of row); on the next row, k the k sts.
and drop the YOs remembering to keep up the pattern of first st. increases).
Repeat these two rows until your sarong is as deep/long as you want it.
Begin decreases:
Decrease side:
Row 1 and every RS (odd-numbered) row: With MC, k2tog; k to end of row
Row 2: K all sts.
At the same time: every 10 rows, switch to CC. Do a "set-up" row for a
drop stitch (*k, YO; rep from * to end of row); on the next row, k the k sts.
and drop the YOs skipping the pattern of first st. decreases).
Keep up pattern of decreases until only 1 st. remains. Pull yarn through
loop on needle. Weave in all ends.
NOTE: Venus is prone to fraying. FrayChek (available at craft
stores) is recommended. Sarong can also be used as a shawl for summer
evenings!
Enjoy!
