Stitches: A Synopsis
by Marie Stroughter
The Santa Clara
Convention Center was a beehive of activity this past February 2-25, 2007.
It was the annual Stitches West show, hosted by
XRX, Inc.,
the company behind Stitches East, Midwest and West events, Camp Stitches,
and Knitter's Magazine.
Four days, over 100 classes, hundreds of vendors, two fashion shows and
free demonstrations galore, Stitches is the one event fiber enthusiasts,
from novice to expert, save up for all year around.
I know a few "Stitches veterans" and I love hearing the "war stories" from
how to navigate before buying down to how much cash to bring, and when is
the best time to shop!

This year, the buzz words were "exotic fibers." From qiviut to
Seacell, if
it was unusual, it was hot! For proof, see your LYS (local yarn shop) and you'll notice new
publications either dedicated to exotic fibers, such as Amy Singer's "No
Sheep for You," or Donna Druchunas' "Arctic Lace," or magazines with articles
in them, like the supplemental
offering from Interweave Knits, Interweave Felt.

Marie Stroughter is Black Purl Magazine’s Managing Editor and an avid
knitter and crocheter.
She serves as Manager of Education and Good Works for the upscale
knitting studio,
Knitting Arts, in her native California, and also teaches there. She is
enrolled in the Master Hand Knitting Program
offered by The Knitting Guild Association (TKGA),
and was recently elected President of her local TKGA Guild.
In her spare time, she enjoys homeschooling her son (who also knits!); assisting with the work of the church where her
husband serves as minister; and of course, knitting!
