BEADS for Education got its start as a result of a vacation to Kenya, according to Debby Rooney, BEADS Co-Founder. BEADS is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to improving the status of women in Kenya through girls’ education. Since 1993, BEADS programs, which include the Dupoto Women’s Group, Kenyan School Sponsorships, and Amboseli Wildlife Sponsorship, have provided school scholarships for African girls, promoted business development for African women, and supported conservation through education.
BEADS’ major fundraiser is their Break the Chains of Illiteracy Walkathon,
which is in its second year. Approximately 13 Americans and 50-60 Kenyans
participated in the 100-mile walkathon, held January 6-13, 2007 in Kenya.
Though the walkathon has just been completed, walker sponsorships are
still available. To sponsor a walker, please contact Debby Rooney
directly. The Dupoto Women’s Group consists of 25 women. Since families are required to contribute to send their daughters to school, the Dupoto Women’s Group supports more than 125 children by producing high-quality, handcrafted beadwork. From ornaments and bowls to dog collars and key chains, these traditionally-crafted products are sold through the website and privately through home shows. The BEADS programs help Kenyan girls finish school. BEADS affords a Kenyan girl the opportunity to select a career she chooses and most likely be the sole wife of a man she chooses to marry. BEADS programs give Kenyan girls choices; choices that so many take for granted.
