Rose Hearts Shawl
Design by Elizabeth A. Matthews

The inspiration for this shawl came after I had carded and dyed about 3 ounces of silk and merino together.  I spun it on my spinning wheel, and ended up with about 350 yards.  I sat down one evening and just started knitting.  I love to knit lace, so I decided that I would make a small shawl from the few yards I had.  After about 5 hours of knitting, I ended up with a gorgeous little “shoulder shawl”.  The next day, I went to my local yarn shop and had the shawl with me.  I had an overwhelming response.  Someone wanted to buy it off my shoulders, and someone else asked for the pattern.

Well, that inspired me to sit down and actually write “officially” the pattern for the shawl.  After a good month of re-knitting and writing, and re-working, I ended up with the version in the pictures.  The Rose Hearts Shawl.  Using 2 balls of Misti Alpaca, I was able to knit the shawl in the picture.  It’s been a work in progress, but well worth the effort.  Now, I’m looking forward to sharing this simple beginner’s lace project with others who have always wanted to knit lace.  If you’re an experienced lace knitter, this pattern is perfect to get your mind off of detailed charts, and let you memorize a soothing, simple lace pattern.  And for a longer shawl, just simply keep reworking the chart.  Wash, block and you have a beautiful shawl to wear, admire and be admired!
