Brown Sugar Calendar
Diabetes Prevention &
Management -- They're in Your Hands

Did You Know...
African Americans are 1.8 times more
likely to have diabetes as
non-Hispanic Whites of similar age?*
On average, about 2.5 million or 9.5% of
Hispanic and Latino Americans aged 20 years or older
have been diagnosed with diabetes?*
Lend a Hand!
Black Purl Magazine is soliciting original needlecraft designs and
patterns to be included in its 2008 compassionate calendar, Brown
Sugar. Calendars will be
on sale by November of 2007, National Diabetes Month. Sale proceeds
will be donated to the
American
Diabetes Association.
Please note the following specifics:
- Any needlecraft submissions are
accepted, i.e., sewing, knitting, crochet, tatting, needlepoint,
embroidery, etc.;
- All submissions should be emailed
to
editor@black-purl-magazine.com;
- Designers should submit a digital
photograph suitable for print (300dpi);
- Designers should also submit 1-2
paragraphs about their design as it relates to diabetes in their
own lives or the lives of someone they know (e.g., I could design
socks with my mom in mind. She has been an insulin-dependent
diabetic for the past 10+ years and always has cold feet. So
my story could have something to do with that fact.)
- The calendar will also include
tips for diabetes management and prevention;
- The submission deadline is
March 15, 2007.
- Calendar submissions are open to
any needlecrafter of any skill level.
- No project is too small.
We'd like as much variety as possible. It may help to have a
calendar month in mind when designing a project. Designs
could range from holiday ornaments to a box of crocheted candies
to quilted postcards.
Use your imagination!
I hope you'll lend your time and talents to this
worthy cause. If you have any questions, check out the FAQs
below or send an
email.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
Is this project open to all designers?
Yes, this project is open to everyone, even if
you've never designed before. Many crafters don't call
themselves designers. However, if you can imagine, you can
design. A project like this is a perfect way to "cut your
design teeth."
What kinds of designs are you looking for?
Designs can be of almost anything, i.e.,
wearables, home decor, socks, etc. When determining what to
make, it may be easier to either think of a diabetes-related story
or consider a particular month and submit accordingly.
If I submit a design, what's in it for me?
Although we will not offer payment for the
calendar designs, each designer will receive a calendar (valued at
$20) at no charge. And don't forget that the feeling of doing
good work is priceless!
As the designer, do I retain copyright?
Yes, you retain the copyright.
As long as I retain the copyright, can I submit something that
has been previously published?
Yes, just let us know where it has been
published so we can give proper credit.
Will all submitted designs be accepted?
Because we're accepting submission for a
calendar, there will only be room for 12 designs, one for each
month. Designs will be considered on a first-come,
first-served basis as well as on uniqueness, flair, and
diabetes-related story. Don't take any chances on not being
part of this wonderful project. If you're thinking about
submitting, we encourage you to do so early.
Will the calendar be an annual project?
We are considering making the calendar an annual
project, donating to a different charity each year. We'll let
you know.
How can I purchase a calendar?
Calendars will be available for sale on the
website. We'll also work to have them in local yarn stores.
If you'd like to see it in a yarn store near you, please
email with contact information.
